Decubitus is a major concern in geriatric medicine since 70 percent of all decubitus cases occur in persons over 70. It is closely related to immobilization syndrome which, in addition to instability, incontinence, and intellectual impairment, is one of the so-called „major geriatric syndromes“. These mainly occur in late old age (over age 75) as a complement to the syndromological picture of general multimorbidity. They are commonly accompanied by loss of self-sufficiency. The issues of aetiopathogenesis, clinical picture including classification and complications are discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the possible role of scales in early identifying persons at risk, prevention, and modern treatment options.
