A significant number of pregnancies are complicated by the need for surgery not directly related to pregnancy, either for diagnostic

or therapeutic indications. Careful assessment of the benefits and risks of the intervention for both mother and fetus is always necessary.

Pregnancy-induced changes of maternal physiology, which are specific in different stages of pregnancy, need to be considered.

This article reviews some of the most relevant physiologic changes that affect anaesthetic management of the parturient. It also reviews

potential risks of drugs, commonly used in anaesthesia and intensive care, for mother and fetus.

Keywords: pregnancy, anaesthesia, nonobstetric surgery, teratogenicity
