Colloid silver and its biological activity

Renata Večeřová
Ústav mikrobiologie LF UP v Olomouci

The theoretical part of this article summarizes the antimicrobial potential of silver, including well-known historical facts, and its application in the form of nanoparticles within colloidal systems or as a part of nanocomposites. The outcomes of biological activity of colloidal silver tested at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and Faculty of Science, Palacky University Olomouc, are also summarized in this article. The tests undertaken were focused on silver nanoparticles and their antibacterial and antifungal activity, cytotoxicity and synergic effect with selected antibiotics, and the development and testing of nanocomposites with possible medical application.

Keywords: colloid silver, silver nanoparticles, antimicrobial activity
