From the perspective of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetic actions of drugs, there are clear differences between the genders. These differences have the potential to alter the efficacy, safety and even perception of risk of pharmacotherapy. Past research hasshown that women tend to reach a higher plasma concentration of administered drug than males. This can be as a direct resultof; distribution difference between genders, total body water capacity, the percentage of adipose tissue, renal blood flow andlastly due to metabolic activity of the individual. The pharmacodynamics differences between the genders need to be more thoroughlystudied, however, generally speaking women tend to experience more frequent and more severe adverse drug reactions. In mentioning this we have to clarify that women tend to be prescribed higher doses per body weight of medication then men.

Keywords: perception of risks, adverse drug reactions, safety of pharmacotherapy, sex differences, women, pharmacokinetics,
pharmacodynamics.
