Purpose: Solidago virgaurea „goldenrod“ is a known medicinal plant that has been used since ancient times (1, 2). The genus Solidago is interesting in terms of both biological effects and the presence of many interesting secondary metabolites – flavonoids, phenolic acids and glucosides, polysaccharides and others (3). Solidago virgaurea is known to exhibit diuretic, antiinflammatory and newly described antitumoral, antimicrobial, sedative and hypotensive effects (1, 2). Primarily flavonoids and phenolic diglucoside – leiocarposide belong to secondary metabolites having primarily a positive effect on diuresis (3). Our objective...

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic, complex and heterogeneous respiratory disorder with increasing morbidity and mortality worldwide and in European population, too. However, despite concordant publications indicating an increase in the number of deaths due to COPD worldwide, in the past few years several publications have reported decreases and downward projections of COPD mortality rates in various countries. One of the main reasons of mortality reduction for COPD is an effective pharmacological treatment, especially when administered in the early stages of the disease. The cornerstone of the current pharmacological...

Current recommendations for the treatment of chronic obstructive bronchopulmonary disease (COPD) start to be oriented by the form of personalized approach. This approach is related especially to the anti-inflammatory drugs, beyond this group the most widely prescribed are inhaled corticosteroids (ICS). ICS treatment can be beneficial for the patient but it can also lead to serious adverse drug reactions. The potentially most dangerous infectious complications are related to respiratory tract (pneumonia, tuberculosis). In common clinical practice there is often problem of overtreatment or inappropriate indication of ICS. In symptomatic patients...

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) belongs to pulmonary diseases with a grim prognosis and challenging treatment. It is characterized by progressive breathlessness and physical signs of clubbed fingers and crepitus found on auscultation at lung bases. Radiologic and histopathologic findings of IPF correspond to those of usual interstitial pneumonia. The mean survival of IPF patients is 2.5 years. Until recently, no efficient therapy of IPF existed. The year 2011 became a milestone in IPF treatment when the first antifibrotic drug, pirfenidone, was registered in most European countries. In 2015, the second antifibrotic drug, nintedanib, came...

In the 21st century, due to unhealthy lifestyle, higher average age of population with longer life expectancy, naturally there are also more individuals affected by population diseases and manifested or subclinical immunodeficiencies connected there with. Particularly these individuals are more prone to lower respiratory tract infections like acute bronchitis or pneumonia. The incidence of both of these clinical units is rising and more often the course of the diseases is more severe. In this review article we will focus on definition of both of the diseases, their diagnostics, their therapy, and at last but not least on the clinical experiences.

Due to the wide use of antiretroviral therapy in the treatment of HIV infection there was a significant decrease in morbidity and mortality of infected persons. This kind of treatment has significantly improved its effectiveness and safety, in the last two decades. The main remaining limits of antiretroviral therapy are the toxicity and viral resistance. A key factor affecting the emergence of viral resistance is drug adherence. The drug adherence puts relatively high demands onpatient’s self-discipline. Fortunately, in the current period are available treatment options reflecting the need of comfort therapy schemes. Trend of the last...

The case report is about male with incidental detection of lupus anticoagulant antibody and venous thrombosis after surgery. Deep vein thrombosis developed shortly after cessation of pharmacological thromboprophylaxis. Warfarin therapy was difficult managed and was associated with hair loss and extension of thrombosis. So that rivaroxaban was introduced and during this therapy thrombotic veins became patent. Long-term anticoagulation is indicated in this setting.
