Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is an atherothrombotic syndrome in which there is a progressive narrowing of the arteries of the legs. Intermittent claudication is a clinical sign of symptomatic PAD. The development of symptomatic PAD significantly affects the quality of life and, in coincidence with other atherosclerotic manifestations, increases the mortality rate in this group of patients. Our study evaluated the effect of the vasoactive substance pentoxifylline on the claudication interval in symptomatic patients with PAD. Parenteral administration of pentoxifylline infusion therapy in a group of 50 patients with a worsening of claudication...

Úvod: V současné době neexistují studie, které by mapovaly postoje českých lékárníků a farmaceutických asistentů k alternativní a komplementární medicíně. Cílem naší pilotní studie bylo popsat postoje českých lékárníků a farmaceutických asistentů k alternativní a komplementární medicíně (KAM) a dále zjistit, jak často a jaké typy KAM metod lékárníci a farmaceutičtí asistenti nejčastěji sami používají a které doporučují svým klientům. Metodika: Byla provedena průřezová dotazníková studie za použití validovaného instrumentu CAM Health Belief dotazník (CHBQ) a dalších otázek. Do výzkumného šetření byl zahrnut convenience vzorek českých lékárníků...

Purpose: To evaluate and analyze the importance of therapeutic monitoring levels of gentamicin in the optimization and individualization of dosage regimens in patients with altered pharmacokinetics. Patients and methods: Our retrospective study included 144 patients whose serum levels of gentamicin were measured at the time of minimum and maximum concentrations before and after a possible dose adjustment in the years 2010–2012. Gentamicin concentrations were measured with the Abbott AxSYM analyzer in the pharmacokinetic laboratory of the Nitra Teaching Hospital. The results of therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) were analyzed mainly in...

The diagnosis of breast cancer during pregnancy is uncommon with an incidence of 0.7 in every 1,000 pregnant women. It is the second most frequent cancer during pregnancy. Data on the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer during pregnancy are based on retrospective studies and case reports. All women with this cancer should be referred to an institution with expertise in dealing with such cases. Patients should be managed by a multidisciplinary team which, in addition to an oncology team, includes an obstetrician and a neonatologist. Breast cancer associated with pregnancy is divided into breast cancer during pregnancy and breast cancer...

A significant number of pregnancies are complicated by the need for surgery not directly related to pregnancy, either for diagnostic or therapeutic indications. Careful assessment of the benefits and risks of the intervention for both mother and fetus is always necessary. Pregnancy-induced changes of maternal physiology, which are specific in different stages of pregnancy, need to be considered. This article reviews some of the most relevant physiologic changes that affect anaesthetic management of the parturient. It also reviews potential risks of drugs, commonly used in anaesthesia and intensive care, for mother and fetus.

The biological, pharmacological and therapeutic properties of leflunomide in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are reviewed. Leflunomide alone, or in combination with other antirheumatic drugs, is an effective and potent immunosuppressant developed for the treatment of moderate to severe RA. Leflunomide can be used as a first-line DMARD in patients with RA who cannot tolerate methotrexate or in whom the drug is contraindicated. The addition of leflunomide to methotrexate in patients with RA who do not respond adequately to methotrexate monotherapy can help improve disease activity control. Leflunomide may be used in combination with...

Since the mid-nineties of the last century, combination antiretroviral therapy has been the main treatment strategy for HIV. Reverse transcriptase inhibitors are among the traditionally used drug classes. Etravirine is a second-generation non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI). Due to the need to combine drugs from different classes, each newly approved medicinal product is an option for patients with resistance or intolerance to previous therapy. Etravirine is generally characterized by high efficacy, a low risk of side effects and a higher resistance barrier in comparison with first-generation NNRTIs.

This paper is focused on mercury, a plentifully used chemical element. This chemical element can also be life threatening. Mercury is encountered in daily life, although not as frequently as before. The paper describes the symptoms of both acute and chronic poisoning caused by this chemical element. A case report is presented of a 35-year-old man who was poisoned with mercury. The diagnosis and resulting treatment of this poisoning are described. The case also demonstrates the body's individual reaction to an increased level of mercury that can be perceived very subjectively by patients.

Ten-point glycaemic profile: a flexible indicator of therapeutic efficacy and dawn phenomenon in persons with type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus This overview has summarized the authors' experience with intensive selfmonitoring including an evaluation of glucometers' reliability. A ten-point glycaemic profile and continuous monitoring are flexible indicators of therapeutic effectiveness and the dawn phenomenon in persons with type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus. A personal glucometer, selfmonitoring and education are now becoming prerequisites for successful intensive insulin treatment particularly when using the insulin pump. These modern...
