Childhood immunization is currently one of the most widely discussed topics of the population and the number of its opponents is increasing. Using self-report questionnaires, we surveyed the attitude, awareness and knowledge of parents regarding childhood immunization, with respect to gender, age, education and healthcare relatedness of their occupation. Our paper also deals with the current state of obligatory and recommended childhood vaccination as well as the presence of adverse reactions afterwards.

Introduction: Aspirin was patented in the year 1899 by Felix Hoffmann. The salicylate group of drugs works primarily by peripheral inhibition of the enzyme cyclooxygenase and thus mainly affects inflammatory pain. Our aim was to assess the trends in aspirin consumption in six countries (Slovakia, Czech Republic, Norway, Denmark, Australia) during the first 12 years of the third millennium. Methods: We assessed the consumption of aspirin in the ATC group N02B (Other analgesics and antipyretics). Consumption data were obtained from the websites of national medicines agencies. We used the evaluation of daily defined doses per 1,000 inhabitants...

Postmenopausal osteoporosis is associated with a significant increase in the risk of fractures. Osteoporotic fractures are associated with a huge burden for the patient, worsening their functional capacity as well as having a significant economic impact. The primary or secondary prevention of fractures is the main goal of osteoporosis treatment. Pharmacotherapy plays a major role in the therapy of postmenopausal osteoporosis. The review paper deals with current treatment options for postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Vitamin D is one of the lipophilic vitamins that is necessary for the correct structure and function of the skeleton. From the perspective of a specialist in clinical osteology, a reduced level of vitamin D is significant in terms of increased hazard of fall and fracture in an elderly patient. This hazard is due to both osteoporosis and decreased function and quantity of muscle mass, i.e. sarcopenia. Sufficient supplementation of vitamin D is one of the pharmacological goals in the care of patient with frailty syndrome. The basic discrepancy between this syndrome and the chronological age is potential reversibility of frailty syndrome. Vitamin...

This is a report of recent progresses in the search for new osteoporosis therapies. The aim of treatment in patients at high risk for fractures is to reduce the risk of a first or a subsequent fracture. Vertebral and nonvertebral fracture prevention (including the hip) using currently available bisphosphonates, denosumab, and teriparatide is effective with a reasonable safety profile in severe osteoporosis. Initiation of and adherence to fracture prevention drugs are still low. New potential developments of promising new drugs with new mechanisms of action include the antiresorptive odanacatib, a selective inhibitor of cathepsin K, and osteoanabolic...

The paper examines drugs of individual drug classes that are most likely to cause peripheral nerve injury. The authors describe the clinical features of injury in individual drugs as well as discuss the mechanism of injury, predisposing factors, relation to dose and cumulative dose, reversibility, and importance of early recognition of nerve injury. They suggest that drug-induced neuropathies are more frequent than currently believed.

The inhibition of platelet receptor P2Y12 is considered to be a basic step in the treatment of patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Clopidogrel that has been widely used to date is currently being replaced with new antiplatelet drugs prasugrel and ticagrelor with a more rapid onset of therapeutic effect and more expressed antiplatelet activity. According to the recent guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology for the management of ACS patients with and without ST segment elevations, these drugs have a higher class of recommendation than clopidogrel. The results of clinical trials confirmed a significant reduction in ischemic...

Hormonal therapy is the oldest and safest clinically proven therapeutic method used in all stages of breast cancer. It is a targeted, individualized treatment. Four basic treatment modalities, namely ablative, competitive, inhibitive, and additive, have been included in the clinical practice. It is the preferred treatment for hormone-dependent breast cancers, including visceral involvement, if there is no high risk or evidence of hormone resistance or if a therapeutic response needs to be achieved rapidly. The article deals with the currently recommended cascade of hormonal treatment, including basic studies which the recommendation is based...

Acute occlusion of the abdominal aorta is a life-threatening event with possible fatal outcomes in spite of urgent surgical management. Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) occurs in 1 to 3% of patients treated with heparin including low-molecular-weight heparin. Rare type II HIT is also manifested by ischemia due to peripheral arterial thrombosis. The mainstay of therapy is termination of heparin treatment and change of anticoagulant medication. Fondaparinux or hirudin-type anticoagulants do not cause HIT. The authors present a case history of a 67-year-old male patient admitted to hospitalization at the department of internal medicine because...
