What is offered (and what is not offered) by the European Medicines Agency in the Medical Literature Monitoring service from the viewpoint of the Czech pharmacovigilance?

Since September 2015, European Medicines Agency has been providing Medical Literature Monitoring (MLM) for selected 300pharmaceutical and 100 herbal substances and their combinations. Completeness of the records from Czech pharmaceuticaljournals in the main source database EMBASE and subsequently in MLM was analyzed. Some deficiencies are given on concreteexamples. Some reportable active substances in case reports are missing in both EMBASE (using only author abstract and not thefull article text describing the case report) and MLM (limiting in addition the choice to 300 substances only).

Statins – drugs belonging to the group of hypolipidemic drugs, are one of the most often prescribed drug groups. There is anincreasing number of trials clearly confirming significant decrease of morbidity and cardiovascular mortality while using them.Despite of existing papers reporting an increased risk perception, predominantly myopathy in elderly, great majority of publicationsconfirm statin benefits also in higher age levels and warn about consequencies of excluding them from preventive therapeuticschemes. In submitted paper we analyze the risk of withdrawal syndrome and point at the options of „statin restart“.
